๐Ÿ“‰ Shrunken Clothes, They Can Be Revived! Diagnosis of Fabric Shrinkage Problem After Washing and Fabric Restoration Know-How (Knits/Wool)

Shrinkageโ€”where clothes like knits, wool, and cashmere noticeably shrink from their original size after washingโ€”is a common laundry failure. Although shrunken clothes are frustrating, you can restore them to some extent to their original shape by understanding the fiber characteristics and taking emergency restoration measures. We share the diagnosis of fabric shrinkage causes and the know-how to restore shrunken clothes.

๐Ÿ”‘ Core Cause of Fabric Shrinkage: Heat, Moisture, Friction (Hot Water + Top-Load/Dryer)

Natural fibers like wool or cotton shrink when the fiber structure tangles or compacts due to hot water and strong friction or rotation (washer, dryer).

๐Ÿ’ก 3 Steps to Restore Shrunken Clothes

1. ๐Ÿ› Loosen Fiber Structure: Dissolve Rinse/Conditioner in Lukewarm Water:

  • Preparation: Pour lukewarm water (below 30ยฐC/86ยฐF) into a basin and dissolve a generous amount of hair rinse or conditioner, mixing well. (The softening ingredient in the rinse helps relax the tangled fibers.)
  • Soaking: Place the shrunken clothes in the solution and soak for 30 minutes to 1 hour. (Allow the clothes to fully absorb the water.)

2. ๐Ÿ‘ Gently Stretch:

  • No Rinsing: Take the soaked clothes out, never wring them out or rinse them, place them on a towel, roll them up, and gently pat to remove only the excess water.
  • Stretching Work: Lay the clothes flat and gently pull them with both hands, focusing on the shrunken areas, to stretch them back to their original shape. (Focus especially on areas with severe shrinkage like the neck, sleeves, or length.)

3. ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Dry Flat (Shape Setting):

  • Lay Flat to Dry: To prevent the stretched shape from changing, lay them flat on a drying rack until completely dry. (Never hang them on a hanger or put them in the dryer.)
  • Use Heavy Objects: It is also a good method to place non-heavy objects (e.g., heavy books) on the four corners of the garment during drying to set the shape and prevent it from shrinking again.

The best way to prevent shrinkage is cold water washing, wool cycle, neutral detergent, and flat drying. Remember that the restoration process is an emergency measure.
