Wool (Wool) Fabric Care: Dry Cleaning vs. Self-Water Washing, Proper Drying and Storage Know-How
๐ Symbol of Warmth and Softness, Wool: Dry Cleaning vs. Self-Water Washing, Proper Drying and Storage Know-How
Wool is a natural animal fiber boasting excellent warmth, moisture absorption, and elasticity, but it is very susceptible to heat and friction, which can easily cause shrinkage or fiber damage. We share the correct care know-how to extend the lifespan and maintain the softness of wool garments, focusing on dry cleaning and self-water washing.
๐ Core of Wool Care: Neutral Detergent, Cold (or Lukewarm) Water, Minimal Friction
Wool fibers are most stable in a weak acid, neutral detergent, and cold water environment, and strong friction causes the fibers to tangle and shrink, so you should only lightly squeeze them even when hand washing.
๐ก 3 Steps for Wool Garment Care and Washing
1. ๐งผ Deciding Between Dry Cleaning and Self-Water Washing:
- Dry Cleaning Recommended: Outerwear or suits that are prone to shape deformation, such as jackets and coats, and expensive clothing should always be sent to a dry cleaner to maintain shape and remove oily stains.
- Self-Water Washing Possible: Relatively light clothing such as knits and mufflers can be washed at home using a neutral detergent (wool shampoo) after checking the care label.
2. ๐ฆ Wool Self-Water Washing Know-How:
- Cold or Lukewarm Water: Wash using cold or lukewarm water below 30ยฐC (86ยฐF). Hot water is the main cause of shrinkage.
- Wool Cycle/Hand Wash: When using a washing machine, select the 'Wool Cycle' or 'Delicate Cycle' and place the garment in a laundry net to reduce friction. When hand washing, gently squeeze or soak before rinsing. (Do not wring.)
- Sufficient Rinsing and Fabric Softener: Rinse sufficiently to prevent neutral detergent residue from remaining, and using a wool-specific fabric softener can help maintain the softness of the fiber.
3. ๐ฌ๏ธ Proper Drying and Storage:
- Dry Flat: Wool absorbs water and becomes heavy, making it prone to stretching. Remove water with a towel after spinning and lay flat on a drying rack to dry. (Do not use hangers.)
- Long-Term Storage: When storing in the closet, include moth repellents to prevent moth damage, and fold and store or hang on a dedicated wide-shouldered hanger to prevent the shape from collapsing.
For wool garments, frequent ventilation after wearing is more beneficial for extending their lifespan than frequent washing.
