Activewear/Functional Clothing Care: Know-How for Removing Sweat Odor and Maintaining Functionality
๐ช Essential for Comfortable Workouts! Know-How for Washing Activewear/Functional Clothing to Remove Sweat Odor and Maintain Functionality
Activewear and hiking clothes, as functional clothing (Function Wear), have special features such as moisture-wicking and quick-drying or water repellency/waterproofing. These functions can be easily damaged by incorrect washing methods (strong detergents, fabric softeners, dryer use), leading to odors or loss of function. We share the washing know-how to maintain the function of activewear for a long time and completely remove sweat odor.
๐ Core of Functional Clothing Washing: Neutral Detergent, No Fabric Softener, Quick Washing
The key is to use a neutral detergent for specially coated functional fibers, to never use fabric softeners which block the fiber pores, and to wash quickly without leaving sweat stains for long.
๐ก 3 Steps for Washing Activewear/Functional Clothing
1. ๐ฆ Immediate/Quick Washing After Workout (Odor Prevention):
- Immediate Wash: Sweat-soaked activewear is the main cause of bacterial growth and odor setting. Washing as soon as possible after a workout is best.
- Pre-Wash/Soaking: If immediate washing is difficult, soak briefly in cold water to dilute sweat components, or soak in water mixed with baking soda for about 30 minutes to help remove odors.
2. ๐งด Use Neutral Detergent and Absolutely No Fabric Softener:
- Use Neutral (Liquid) Detergent: Strong alkaline detergents can damage the special coating of functional fibers, so use a liquid neutral detergent (wool shampoo, etc.).
- Fabric Softener Prohibited: Fabric softeners form a coating film on the fiber surface, inhibiting moisture-wicking, quick-drying, and water repellency/waterproofing, so they must never be used.
3. ๐ฌ๏ธ Natural Drying and Functional Care:
- Natural Drying is Essential: Functional clothing is sensitive to heat, so dryer use is prohibited; natural dry in a well-ventilated shade. (Sunlight can cause color distortion.)
- Water Repellency Restoration (Optional): If the water repellency of hiking clothes has weakened, you can try to restore the water-repellent finish by applying low heat after washing (low-temperature ironing or light air from the dryer).
The key is to wash functional clothing separately from regular clothes, using a neutral detergent with cold water and no fabric softener.
