๐Ÿ‘ƒ Why Does it Smell After Washing? Dealing with Post-Wash Odors: Identifying the Cause and Know-How to Remove/Prevent Bad Odors in Laundry and Washing Machines

Sometimes, clothes smell musty (like a damp rag or sour smell) even after washing, or a sewer smell rises from the washing machine itself. This indicates that the washing was not done properly, or that the washing machine and laundry management are flawed. We share the know-how to identify the root cause of unpleasant odors after washing, remove them, and prevent them.

๐Ÿ”‘ Core of Odor Removal: Eliminate Bacterial Breeding Environment, Drying, Drum Hygiene

The key is to eliminate the environment (moisture) where the main culprits of odor, bacteria and mold, can breed, quickly dry the laundry, and maintain the cleanliness of the washing machine interior (drum).

๐Ÿ’ก 3 Steps for Post-Wash Odor Removal and Prevention

1. ๐Ÿ‘• Removing Laundry Odors (Sour/Musty Smell):

  • Odor Cause: Occurs when bacteria breed inside the fabric due to the clothes being left damp after washing.
  • Removal Know-How:
    • Utilize Sodium Percarbonate: Re-wash smelly clothes after soaking them in warm water with sodium percarbonate dissolved in it for 30 minutes to 1 hour. (Sanitization and deodorizing effect)
    • Utilize Vinegar: Adding 1/2 cup of vinegar during the final rinse helps sanitize bacteria in the fibers and neutralizes odors.
  • Prevention: Clothes that have finished washing must be taken out immediately and quickly and fully dried in the sun or dryer.

2. ๐ŸŒ€ Removing Washing Machine Internal Odors (Sewer/Mold Smell):

  • Odor Cause: Odor occurs due to the accumulation of limescale, detergent residue, and mold inside the drum, rubber gasket, and detergent dispenser.
  • Removal Know-How:
    • Drum Cleaning: Perform regular (monthly) drum sanitization cleaning using a dedicated drum cleaner or sodium percarbonate.
    • Component Cleaning: Thoroughly scrub and dry the water from the rubber gasket of Front Loaders and the detergent dispenser with a brush.
  • Prevention: Always leave the washing machine door and detergent dispenser open after washing to completely dry internal moisture.

3. ๐Ÿงบ Pre-Wash Management (Laundry Basket):

  • No Wet Laundry: Sweaty clothes or wet towels must be made dry before being placed in the laundry basket. (Leaving them wet causes mold and odor.)
  • Laundry Basket Hygiene: The laundry basket itself should also be disinfected or wiped periodically to manage hygiene.

Post-wash odor is a sign of 'bacterial growth'. Prevent it with perfect drying and regular washing machine cleaning.
