Linen Fabric Care: Know-How for Wrinkle-Minimizing Ironing, Proper Washing, and Drying
๐ฌ๏ธ Cool and Crisp Natural Material! Linen Fabric Care: Know-How for Wrinkle-Minimizing Ironing, Proper Washing, and Drying
Linen (flax fiber) is a natural fiber widely used in summer clothing, known for its excellent breathability and absorbency, which provides comfort, but it has the disadvantage of wrinkling easily and the fibers tending to stiffen when washed. We share the care know-how to maintain the natural elegance and shape of linen fabric and minimize wrinkles.
๐ Core of Linen Care: Neutral Detergent, Gentle Wash, Ironing When Slightly Damp
The key is to use a neutral detergent and wash gently, use fabric softener (or vinegar) during drying to prevent the fibers from stiffening, and iron when moisture remains to remove wrinkles.
๐ก 3 Steps for Linen Fabric Care and Washing
1. ๐งผ Linen Washing Know-How:
- Neutral Detergent and Cold/Lukewarm Water: Linen is strong against alkalinity, but use a neutral detergent to minimize fiber damage. Wash with cold or lukewarm water below 30ยฐC.
- Gentle Cycle or Hand Wash: When using a washing machine, use the gentlest cycle for a short time, such as the wool cycle or delicate cycle. Avoid soaking in water for a long time or strong friction, as it can damage the fibers.
- Tip: Utilize Fabric Softener/Vinegar: Linen tends to stiffen after washing. Using fabric softener during the final rinse, or adding 1/2 cup of vinegar as a natural alternative, helps soften the stiffness.
2. ๐ฌ๏ธ Linen Drying Know-How:
- No Wringing: Use a light spin cycle and do not wring it out; instead, wrap it in a towel to remove water.
- Hang to Dry: Hang it on a hanger to shape it while drying, or lay it flat on the floor. Direct sunlight can cause color fading, so dry it in a well-ventilated shade. (Dryer use is not recommended as it causes shrinkage.)
3. ๐ Linen Wrinkle Removal and Storage (Ironing is Essential):
- Iron When Slightly Damp: Linen wrinkles severely after drying. To effectively smooth out wrinkles, you must iron it when about 10-20% of moisture remains in the fiber.
- High-Temperature Ironing: Linen has strong heat resistance and can be ironed at high temperatures (180~200ยฐC). Use plenty of steam when ironing. (If completely dry, sprinkle water with a spray bottle before ironing.)
- Storage: It is best to store it on a hanger to prevent re-wrinkling.
The natural wrinkles of linen are also a charm point. Wrinkles that are not severe can be smoothed out by spraying a little water and letting it dry.
