Dealing with Fabric Shrinkage After Washing and Drying: Identifying the Cause and Know-How to Restore Shrunken Clothes
๐ Can Shrunken Clothes Be Restored? Dealing with Fabric Shrinkage After Washing and Drying: Identifying the Cause and Know-How to Restore Shrunken Clothes
The phenomenon of clothes shrinking, or Shrinkage, after washing mainly occurs in heat-sensitive natural fibers (wool, cotton, rayon), and is common especially when using a dryer on a high-heat setting. Shrunken clothes can be frustrating, but some materials have the potential for restoration. We share the know-how to understand the principle of fabric shrinkage and restore shrunken clothes to their original shape.
๐ Core of Fabric Shrinkage Restoration: Fiber Relaxation, Lukewarm Water, Utilize Rinse/Treatment
Fabric shrinkage occurs when fiber tissues tangle due to heat and friction. The core of restoration is to gently relax the tangled fibers and carefully stretch the shrunken fibers to return them to their original shape.
๐ก 3 Steps for Restoring and Preventing Shrunken Clothes
1. ๐ Relax Fibers with Rinse/Treatment in Lukewarm Water:
- Supplies: Shrunken clothes, lukewarm water (about 30ยฐC), hair rinse or hair treatment
- Relaxation Process: Fill a basin with lukewarm water and pump rinse or treatment 2-3 times to dissolve it well. (Protein fiber softening effect)
- Soaking: Put the shrunken clothes in and soak for 30 minutes to 1 hour to allow the fibers to relax gently. (Never rub or scrub.)
2. ๐ Carefully Stretch to Reshape:
- Remove Water: Take out the clothes without rinsing (must leave the rinse component), place them on a dry towel, and press firmly with the towel to remove only the water. (Do not wring.)
- Stretch: Lay the clothes flat on a flat surface, and carefully pull them with your hands in the shrunken direction (vertical or horizontal) to reshape them to their original size.
- Fixation: Lay flat as is to dry. (Hanging on a hanger may cause them to stretch too much due to weight.)
3. ๐ Shrinkage Prevention Know-How:
- Avoid Heat Drying: Avoid using the dryer for heat-sensitive materials such as wool, knit, and rayon, or always use the low heat cycle.
- Check Care Label: Always check the care label before washing and drying to adhere to the appropriate temperature and method.
You can also use baby shampoo instead of rinse or treatment. This is effective in loosening the protein components of the fibers.
