๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ Protect the Performance! Functional Clothing (Sportswear) Care: Washing Methods to Maintain Waterproof, Water-Repellent, and Sweat-Wicking Functions for a Long Time

Functional clothing (sportswear, outdoor apparel) like Gore-Tex, Coolmax, and Dri-Fit have special features such as sweat absorption, quick drying, waterproofing, and water repellency. However, using regular detergents or fabric softeners can damage or clog this functional membrane, leading to the loss of its original function (especially breathability, waterproof/water-repellent properties). We share the correct washing and care methods to maintain the performance of functional clothing for a long time.

๐Ÿ”‘ Core of Functional Clothing Care: No Regular Detergent/Softener, Cold Water, Neutral Detergent

Functional clothing must strictly prohibit the use of regular detergents, especially fabric softeners and bleach, and should be washed with specialized functional clothing detergent or liquid neutral detergent in cold water to prevent functional damage.

๐Ÿ’ก 3 Know-How for Washing and Care of Functional Clothing (Sportswear)

1. ๐Ÿšซ Strictly Prohibit Fabric Softener and Bleach:

  • Cause of Damage: The coating ingredients in fabric softener inhibit the fiber's sweat absorption function (hygroscopicity) and breathability, and clog the microscopic pores of the waterproof/water-repellent functional membrane, leading to functional degradation.
  • Detergent Selection: Instead of regular detergent, use specialized functional clothing detergent, or if unavoidable, use a small amount of liquid neutral detergent. (Powder detergent easily leaves residue.)

2. ๐Ÿงบ Cold Water Wash and Gentle Cycle:

  • Washing Method: Put it in a laundry net and select the gentlest cycle such as the wool or hand wash cycle with cold water. Separate washing is recommended as functional clothing can be damaged or pilled by friction.
  • Thorough Rinsing: Detergent residue causes functional degradation, so rinse thoroughly to completely remove detergent components.

3. ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Drying and Water-Repellent Function Restoration:

  • Natural Drying is Essential: The high heat of a dryer damages the functional membrane and causes fabric deformation, so it should never be used. Dry quickly in a well-ventilated shade.
  • Water-Repellent Function Restoration: If the water-repellent function weakens during use, you can temporarily restore it by ironing at a low temperature after the clothes are dry or by briefly putting them in a dryer (cold air cycle or air-fluff cycle) to apply minimal heat. (Always check the care label.)

Functional clothing requires delicate care instead of washing convenience. Enjoy your outdoor activities more comfortably with the correct washing method.
