❄️ Filling Damage Warning! Types of Padded Jackets You Should Never Wash at Home

In the cold winter, a warm Padded Jacket (or Down Jacket) is essential, but its bulk and difficult cleaning often cause concern. While washing at home saves money, the wrong washing method can permanently damage the insulation (down, synthetic filling), shortening the jacket's lifespan. I will tell you which types of down jackets should never be washed carelessly at home and provide the correct care methods.

⚠️ 3 Types of Padded Jackets Not to Wash at Home

Depending on the type of jacket and its filling, dry cleaning or specialized care is necessary.

1. Down (Duck/Goose Feather) Filled Jackets:

  • Problem: Down filling can clump or lose its natural oils after water washing, leading to a sharp decrease in loft and warmth. Regular detergents, in particular, excessively strip the down's oils, making the feathers brittle.
  • Solution: You must use a down-specific neutral pH detergent, and it is safest to take it to a professional dry cleaner to minimize damage to the filling.

2. Jackets with Special Coating/Functional Outer Fabric:

  • Problem: Washing jackets with functional coatings (waterproof, windproof, thermal) in a regular washer can cause the coating to peel or the function to degrade. The organic solvents used in dry cleaning are the main culprits of this damage.
  • Solution: Hand wash using a detergent specific for technical/performance wear or take it to a dry cleaner that specializes in wet cleaning.

3. Jackets with Fur Trims or Leather Details:

  • Problem: Natural fur attached to the hood or sleeves can shed hair or harden when exposed to water. Leather accents can discolor or crack from water and detergent.
  • Solution: Fur and leather details must be separated and managed individually. If the design does not allow separation, you must entrust the whole garment to a specialty cleaner and request spot cleaning.

🏠 Precautions for Washing Down Jackets at Home (Focusing on Spot Cleaning)

1. Pre-Wash is Essential: Instead of washing the entire jacket, spot clean only the heavily soiled areas like the collar and cuffs with a neutral detergent. 2. 'Restore Filling' During Drying: After washing, toss a tennis ball into the dryer with the jacket, or pat it thoroughly by hand during air drying to loosen the clumped filling and restore warmth.

For expensive down jackets, spot cleaning stains and thorough air drying are more important than frequent washing.
