Grass Stain Removal: Secrets to Neatly Erasing Lawn or Plant-Based Grass Stains
๐ฟ Summer's Uninvited Guest, Grass Stains: Secrets to Neatly Erasing Lawn or Plant-Based Stains Without Fabric Damage
When children play or during outdoor activities, clothes are easily marked with grass (lawn) stains. Grass stains are notoriously difficult to remove with regular washing due to the strong pigment component, Chlorophyll, and can even set into the fibers permanently. We share the secrets to effectively removing grass stains without damaging the garment.
๐ Core Principle of Grass Stain Removal: Utilizing Alcohol and Oxygen Bleach
The main component of grass stains, Chlorophyll, has a property that makes it dissolve better in organic solvents (alcohol) than in water. The pigment is also broken down by the oxidizing action of oxygen bleach.
๐ก 3-Step Formula for Grass Stain Removal
1. ๐งช Emergency Treatment: Pigment Decomposition Using Alcohol (Essential)
- Supplies: Prepare rubbing alcohol (ethanol), available at pharmacies, or household clear soju/vodka.
- Method: Dampen a dry cloth or cotton pad with alcohol and gently dab the stained area. (You can visually confirm the pigment transferring to the cloth.)
- Caution: Never rub the stain. Rubbing can cause the pigment to penetrate deeper into the fibers or spread.
2. ๐งผ Pre-Wash: Combined Use of Enzyme Detergent and Oxygen Bleach
- After removing as much pigment as possible with alcohol, apply liquid detergent to the stained area and leave it for about 5 minutes to allow the detergent to penetrate the fibers.
- White Clothes/Strong Fabrics (Cotton, Polyester, etc.): Dissolve oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) in warm water and soak the garment for 30 minutes to 1 hour. (Maximizes pigment decomposition effect)
- Colored Clothes/Sensitive Fabrics: Due to the risk of color fading, apply a stain remover instead of oxygen bleach and gently hand wash with cold water.
3. ๐ Final Wash and Drying:
- After the pre-wash, confirm that the stain is completely removed, and proceed with a regular wash.
- Drying: If the stain is not completely removed, natural dry it. (Heat from a dryer or sunlight can set the stain.)
Grass stains become harder to remove over time, so treating them with alcohol immediately upon staining is the key to success.
