🦠 Contamination Inside the Washer That Dirties Clothes! Cleaning and Maintenance Methods to Completely Remove Mold and Odor from Front-Load/Top-Load Washers

The inside of the washing machine, though out of sight, is the best environment for mold and bacteria to breed due to the combination of detergent residue, soap scum, fiber lint from clothes, and moisture. These contaminants, in turn, transfer back to the laundry, causing musty odors in clothes or skin troubles. We share the cleaning and maintenance methods to completely remove mold and odor from front-load/top-load washers and increase washing efficiency.

🔑 Main Culprits of Washing Machine Internal Contamination

1. Detergent Residue: Especially when powder detergent is overused or does not dissolve in cold water, it sticks to the drum wall and becomes food for mold. 2. Rubber Gasket (Front-Load Washer): Water pools and residue accumulates in the folded part of the gasket, becoming a breeding ground for mold. 3. Top-Load Washer Lint Filter: The accumulation of lint and soap scum in the filter is the main source of odor.

💡 3-Step Formula for Perfect Washer Cleaning and Maintenance

1. 🛁 Tub Cleaning Using Washer Cleaner (Recommended Monthly):

  • Supplies: Sodium percarbonate or dedicated washer cleaner
  • Method: Fill the tub with warm water at 5060°C (122°F140°F) (full for top-load, maximum for front-load), and add 500g of sodium percarbonate or cleaner.
  • Soaking (Essential for Top-Load): Soak the tub for 1–2 hours, then run the standard or tub cleaning cycle. (Soaking is key to breaking down set-in grime.)
  • Caution: Do not use bleach (chlorine bleach) as it can damage washer parts or mix with other detergents to produce toxic gas.

2. 🧹 Cleaning Accessories and Gasket:

  • Detergent Dispenser/Lint Filter: Separate and use a toothbrush to thoroughly remove detergent residue and soap scum.
  • Rubber Gasket (Front-Load Washer): Pull back the inner part of the rubber gasket and meticulously wipe away mold and soap scum with a cloth dampened with a diluted bleach solution (Water 10: Bleach 1). (Then rinse with clean water to remove residue.)

3. 🌬️ Daily Maintenance (Moisture Removal):

  • After washing, always leave the washer door and detergent dispenser open to fully dry the internal moisture.
  • Do Not Leave Wet Laundry Unattended: Do not leave wet laundry in the washer for a long time after the cycle is finished.

Regular washing machine cleaning not only ensures clean clothes but also extends the washer's lifespan.
