๐Ÿ‘ƒ Farewell to Unpleasant Odors! Causes and Permanent Removal of Sweat, Mildew, and Mold Smells from Clothes

Unpleasant odors from clothes are not solved by simple washing and remain even after washing, causing discomfort. The causes of odors are diverse, including bacteria, mold, and residual detergent, and accurately identifying and removing the source of the odor is crucial. We share the know-how for permanently removing sweat, mildew (damp), and mold smells from clothes.

๐Ÿ”‘ Core Cause of Clothes Odor: Bacteria and Mold

Clothes odors are caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that occur when organic materials like sweat and sebum left on the clothes are decomposed by bacteria or mold.

๐Ÿ’ก Permanent Odor Removal Know-How by Odor Type

1. ๐Ÿ’ฆ Sweat/Oil Odor (Especially in New Clothes):

  • Cause: Occurs when sweat, sebum, and oil absorbed by the clothes become food for bacterial growth. (Especially underarms and neck area.)
  • Removal Method:
    • Baking Soda + Warm Water Soak: Dissolve plenty of baking soda in warm water and soak the clothes for over 1 hour. Baking soda is effective in neutralizing the acidic sweat smell and deodorizing.
    • Utilize Vinegar: Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the final rinse to sterilize bacteria and neutralize residual detergent.

2. ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ Mildew Odor (Damp Smell):

  • Cause: Occurs when clothes are not dried sufficiently after washing, allowing bacteria (especially Moraxella) to proliferate.
  • Removal Method:
    • Sterilization Using Heat: Sterilization is key for mildew smell. Boil or soak white clothes in warm water above 50ยฐC (122ยฐF) using sodium percarbonate, and utilize the high-temperature sterilization function of a dryer or a steam iron for colored clothes.
    • Ventilation During Drying: Use a fan or dehumidifier during drying to shorten the drying time, and ensure ventilation by leaving enough space between clothes.

3. ๐Ÿ„ Mold Odor (When left unattended for a long time):

  • Cause: Occurs when mold spores proliferate on clothes in humid environments like the rainy season. (Invisible mold also causes odors.)
  • Removal Method:
    • Mold Removal Washing: Mold spores must be completely removed using a mold stain removal method (e.g., bleach).
    • Washer Tub Cleaning: If clothes retain odor, it is highly likely that mold has proliferated inside the washer tub. You must perform a washer tub cleaning using a washer tub cleaner.

Clothes odor removal is completed not only by washing but also by drying habits and washer maintenance.
