๐Ÿ‘š Don't Despair! The 5-Step Magic Fix for Knits Shrunken by Hot Water

It's truly heartbreaking when your favorite knit or wool sweater shrinks significantly because you accidentally washed it in hot water or put it in the dryer. But don't give up hope! If the fiber hasn't been severely felted (stiffly tangled), there's a "magic 5-step restoration method" you can use at home to return the shrunken garment to its original size. This method also works for cotton and thin knits that have experienced relaxation shrinkage.

โœจ What You'll Need

  • Lukewarm water (around 30ยฐC / 86ยฐF)
  • Hair conditioner, hair rinse, or wool-specific fabric softener (This is the key!)
  • 2โ€“3 large towels
  • A flat drying surface

๐Ÿ–๏ธ 5 Steps to Revive Your Shrunken Knit

1. Prepare the Relaxing Solution (The Core):

  • Fill a basin or clean sink with lukewarm water.
  • Add a generous amount of hair conditioner or rinse (about 5โ€“7 pumps or 2โ€“3 tablespoons). The oil in the conditioner gently relaxes the tangled fibers and reduces friction.

2. Soak Thoroughly:

  • Submerge the shrunken knit completely in the solution and leave it to soak for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Absolutely do not rub or wring it out during this time. It's crucial to let the fibers relax on their own.

3. Rinse and Drain:

  • After the soaking time, gently take the knit out and rinse it lightly with clean water to remove any conditioner residue.
  • Instead of twisting to wring, press down gently with your hands to remove the excess water.

4. Towel Dry & Reshape (The Most Important Step):

  • Lay a large towel flat and place the knit on top.
  • Use another towel to roll the knit up like a sushi roll to absorb the remaining moisture.
  • Now, lay the knit out on a flat surface and carefully use both hands to stretch it back to its original size. (Do the sleeves, then the length, then the width.)

5. Lay Flat to Dry:

  • Keep the stretched shape and lay it flat to dry in a well-ventilated, shaded area. Be careful not to hang it, as it may stretch or distort again.

If your garment wasn't too severely felted, this method can restore it by 80โ€“90% or more. Don't be discouraged by laundry mishapsโ€”trust the power of conditioner and give it a try!
